Lynnette
Lakeland Medical Clinic
Hello, Lynnette! I appreciate your confidence in me to lead this project. The declining patient numbers at Lakeland Medical Clinic is a critical issue that requires immediate attention. I’m eager to address the diversity challenges within our clinic through my leadership abilities. From your email, it’s evident that the root of this problem is our staff’s difficulty in adapting to different cultural norms. The Haitian community is particularly sensitive to their cultural beliefs, values, and healthcare practices, making it essential for our healthcare workers to be well-prepared in managing these aspects (Capella University, n.d.). We should focus on enhancing the cultural responsiveness of our team to ensure that Haitian patients feel welcomed at Lakeland Clinic.
To effectively address this diversity issue, leadership skills such as clear communication, conflict resolution, motivation, critical thinking, decision-making, and relationship-building are essential. A leader must communicate openly and effectively with the team and address conflicts arising from cultural differences (Homan et al., 2020). Furthermore, he must keep employees motivated, especially as the issue may be complex and time-consuming. Additionally, leaders must think critically and make prompt decisions. Building strong relationships with both staff and patients is also key when addressing minority-related concerns (Moore, 2020). These leadership skills will be vital to resolving the diversity issues at Lakeland Medical Clinic and fostering a more inclusive environment for both staff and patients.
A leader I would select to guide a project focused on diversity issues would be Dr. Patricia A. Maryland, former President and CEO of Ascension Healthcare. She has been a significant figure in advancing healthcare equity and diversity. Dr. Maryland has consistently ranked among the top 25 women in healthcare leadership, recognized by Modern Healthcare. Her efforts have focused on addressing disparities in care and ensuring that underserved communities receive equitable access to quality healthcare. Dr. Maryland’s leadership embodies a transformational style, where she inspires and motivates her team to embrace diversity and inclusion as key components of healthcare delivery (Health Evolution, 2024).

Like Dr. Maryland, I prioritize creating a culturally competent workforce at Lakeland Clinic by promoting diversity in hiring and ensuring our staff is well-equipped to serve patients from different cultural backgrounds. One key similarity between Dr. Maryland’s leadership style and mine is our shared commitment to reducing healthcare disparities through strategic planning and training initiatives. However, a difference lies in Dr. Maryland’s vast experience and established reputation, while I am still at an earlier phase in my leadership journey (Health Evolution, 2024. By adopting transformational leadership approaches, I would focus on developing the cultural competence of our existing staff through regular training programs. This strategy would not only enhance the quality of care provided to the Haitian population but also ensure that all patients feel valued and respected within the Lakeland Clinic.
As the leader of the diversity project at Lakeland Medical Clinic, I would rely on transformational leadership skills to address the communication gap between hospital staff and Haitian patients. My main focus would be to inspire and empower the staff to improve communication and build trust with the Haitian community. Establishing this connection will help foster a sense of trust and inclusivity among patients (Bakker et al., 2023). I would prioritize training healthcare workers to enhance their relationship-building and communication skills, ensuring they can effectively engage with patients from different cultural backgrounds. By motivating and involving everyone in the process, I would help create a culture of inclusivity and mutual respect. Through active engagement and a shared commitment to change, this approach will help bridge the communication divide and promote cultural sensitivity at the clinic (Diaz et al., 2020).
Collaboration within a professional team is vital for achieving shared goals, and fostering it requires intentional strategies. One approach is clear and open communication, which builds mutual trust and ensures that team members can work together effectively (Griffiths et al., 2020). Conducting regular team assessments can also encourage accountability and continuous improvement by identifying performance gaps and addressing them through targeted training (Gorman et al., 2020). Additionally, cultural competence training is key when working with diverse groups, as it helps bridge language barriers and cultural differences (Lekas et al., 2020). In this project, I will incorporate team-building exercises and workshops focusing on cross-cultural communication and empathy, building a more inclusive and collaborative environment.

To conclude, I am confident that by applying transformational leadership principles and fostering a culture of inclusivity, we can successfully address the diversity challenges at Lakeland Medical Clinic. Through open communication, team-building, and targeted training focused on cultural competence, we will bridge the gap between our staff and the Haitian community, ensuring that every patient feels respected and understood. I look forward to collaborating with the team to drive meaningful change and improve the quality of care for all patients. Together, we can make Lakeland Clinic a model for diversity and inclusion in healthcare.
